SRI LANKAN EGG HOPPERS ARE THE DELICIOUS NEW BACON’N’EGG ROLLS IN DOWNTOWN SYDNEY

Australian public-service broadcaster and website SBS reports that Sydneysiders “are hopping mad for the Sri Lankan bowl-shaped pancake, known as the hopper”.

“The Saturday-morning queue at Lankan Filling Station’s market stall at Sydney’s Carriageworks Farmer’s Markets is testament to how much we’ve taken to this coconutty crepe-meets-crumpet.”

TEA AND TRAVEL AS VETERAN AUSSIE SCRIBE ENJOYS ALL THE DELIGHTS OF SRI LANKA!

Getting old is not everyone’s cup of tea, but there are compensations—like time to travel and see a world you were too busy weaving life’s rich tapestry to take much notice of.

So it’s doubly appropriate that veteran traveller Phil Hawkes has found time to visit Sri Lanka, land of Ceylon tea, and write a piece for Go55s, the magazine and website for ‘active oldies’ in Australia.

Phil’s trip is in part thanks to the visit by Pledge Holidays’s senior manager Shalindra Henegamage to Australia last year to spread the word about Sri Lanka’s boundless attractions.

SWEDISH CRIME WRITER ZAC O’YEAH RELATES A BRAINY CLOSE ENCOUNTER ON UNAWATUNA BEACH IN SRI LANKA

When the BLink editor of The Hindu asked notorious Swedish crime novelist Zac O’Yeah to write about Sri Lanka, the conversation was probably short, and probably went something like this:

“Zac, baby, Sri Lanka, 1,000 words, your usual off-the-wall style.”

“OK.”

Which explains the opening paragraph: “Not bad at all, I think to myself as I suck the juicy brains out of an especially succulent tiger prawn. I have a thing for zombie flicks in which deranged ‘foodies’ eat each other’s brains.”

That, and a surreal conversation in a Unawatuna restaurant with an “overage beach boy” selling weed who might or might not have been a police informant, sets the tone of the piece.
